Falling History
I loved to read for most of my childhood and all of what I remember growing up. My books clearly show this with there cracked covers, worn pages, the writing and highlight of favorite passages. When told that the material we would use would be books at first I was worried then exciting ideas started to pop up in my mind this could turn out to be an exciting piece as long as I have the right book and the right content.
I have always been interested in European history, the romance, the pain, the difference in culture and how even though we still are so different part of American history comes from European History. So as I was working and thinking about the books I brought to use I just started to play with paper and came up with my final project. For me European History is more then words and dates with events and people. What it is a story that not ever complete in my mind and that is what I wanted to show the viewers of this piece.
Each piece of this sculpture represents a piece of history. The book that is sill together is the platform of history. History is made by history. The past is made the past because we continue to move forward. The Torn paper symbolizes the individual that create history some pieces bigger and more significant than others. The bell with the pictures is the present it tells us what is happening now and lets the past flow out. The rope of paper is the words that are used to create and explain history but it is also the path to the future. The notches of paper tell us that at some point the future will become the present and the past.
It is often said that we would be nothing without a past history. This is true but the statement should say we would be nothing without the past of others history. We must figure out our past and then move on and try and see the past of others.
Brian Dettmer was born 1974 he is considered an American Contemporary artist. He is most know for the work he does with alteration of media—such as old books, maps, record albums, and cassette tapes—to create new, transformed works of 3D sculptures.
Through the years Dettmer has been able to master manipulating paper through cutting, folding, bending, rolling, and stacking. He not only uses books but also cassette tapes on skeletons.
The first art piece shown above is New International Dictionary, 2003. The detail work in this piece is fantastic the tiny the detail cuts make you just want to play with the book. Also its makes you think about do I know all the definitions to these pictures. Now I know the next words are a shock coming out of my mouth but I honestly feel that the piece is too busy I could use some more natural back ground of words to balance the pictures.
The second art piece is New Books of Knowledge, 2009. The color in this piece makes the work of the last one look so dull and vintage while the other piece looks new and bright. The composition of this book adds more of a playful balance that fun to see and you don’t often see in books or sculptures. Dettmer has this great ability to create beautiful pieces and still maintain the integrity of an entire book. He uses movement, balance and line all for his benefit.
His works make me wish that I had a skill hand like his to cut so strait and perfect. If his work wasn’t as perfect as it is I don’t believe it would look half as good.
He creates amazing pieces but I still feel that his photographs have some room for improvement I want to see more of his art work and you can on the web site that I mentioned.

Cardboard O My
When starting project two there was four main concepts and ideas that we had to focus on. These concepts were balance, volume, void, gravity.
Balance is harmonious arrangement or relation of parts or elements within a whole.
Volume is the amount of 3D space occupied by an object.
Void is an empty area or space.
Gravity is the means by which objects with mass attract one another.
This was the final project of my group. It wasn't as perfect as I would like. Part of the orginal plan was to cover the whole inside with texture. there was also some spots that needed more tape and fixing. I had a great time working on this project and I enjoyed working with my group.
While I was working with myself I created my own sculpture. The reason why I chose this piece I wanted create a piece that when made to its full potential it gives the illusion of climbing to the sky. You take the time to walk around it and as you move around the piece you find that you believe you are climbing to your own full potential.
It’s hard to explain why I chose the sculpture that group two created. I guess the best way to put it is that I was drawn to it. It held me visual and in that tilts the head kind of way. I enjoy their use of color, shape, the repetition. Some of the things that I felt that worked well were the movement that the lines created. The tension in placement, and the direction in tape that was repeated from the lines in the piece. There use of the triangle and I believe added a lot of interest and creativity to the piece for the viewer. When they added all the pieces of triangle together it gave you the idea that this could be a shoe. I also feel that it was put together with some skill. Working with cardboard and know that it can be a huge pain I also know that you will never make a cardboard sculpture perfect. They did have some missing tape spots, bowing where the cardboard had bent that made this sculpture almost perfect. Original this group used Red tape and I wish you could still see some of that red, I feel that if they did keep the red it would have added some visual interest.
After all said and done I'm glad to be done with working with cardboard.

Purple Bag
When I started to create my temporary sculptures I wanted to find a theme that I could take and repeat throughout all my sculptures.
A temporary sculpture is a 3-Demension work of art that only last a short amount of time.
The reason why I chose a purple bag is simple to me the purple bag represents the fun of life that then captures the solid items that composes of nature and campus life.
Andy Goldsworthy is well known for his temporary sculptures. Goldsworthy was born in 1956 and is classified as a British Environmental Artist. His art can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In Massachusetts ant Harvard University, Princeton University in New Jersey. In Goodwood and London in the UK. Along with many other places.

Sketching Digitally
What is Google sketch up? Google Sketch up is a 3D modeling program designed for architects, civil engineers, filmmakers, game developers, and related professions. It also includes features to facilitate the placement of models in Google Earth. It is designed to be easier to use than other 3D CAD programs
It truly is easier and lots of fun to play with.
What I tried to created was a fun backyard setting that the whole family could enjoy.
The place where the man is standing is clubhouse that children of all ages could play in. Then you have a climbing tower for the kids that seek adventure. Next to that you see the back of the seating area for the whole family. This is a place where parents can watch children talk or have a huge family barbecue. The far piece is the fence that then through painting and wood work it will become a mural.
An artist who digital work I really admire is Andrew J. Wallerstein
Wallerstein lives in New York he constantly tries to work and his work has been seen on album covers, posters and presentations for major companies like American Express.
When working in the digital format Wallerstein sees it as a new medium in fact he has said. “The new medium is not here to displace but to enhance, just as did the invention of paper, photography, the airbrush, and the endless list of other tools that have preceded us and our "machines".”
In Wallerstein Digital Future, I love his use of putting created images in a real location.

Wire Manipulation
You bend the wire this way you twist the wire that way and you take the step back. You have no idea what you are doing but you feel that you are creating something but what are you creating. You continue to manipulate the wire and you end up with…
Gesture is to show or express direction through movement.
Movement is a change of position that does not entail a change of location.
Balance is the distribution of the weight actual or visual of the elements of a composition.
I tried as best as I could to follow the lines of the people that modeled. The pieces that I am showing you are the pieces that I felt showed the person the best.
Peter Jansen is an artist that works constantly with movement. While working with movement he uses the human form to create energy and space with simple everyday tasks. When looking at some of the first pieces that he made you notice the open space that give the feeling of that they hold no weight. In his most recent work he captures the human movement through space and time in a single spot.

He has also created Attractor objects.
The reason why I enjoy Jansen's work so much is because of his use of the human form. Even in his attractor objects you still see bits and pieces of the human form. I find that his work also holds great lines that my eyes love to follow.

Paper Model
Let me just say first that I don't enjoy working with Bristol paper, but looking at my final product I would say that looking at my final product makes me glad that I keep going and completed my model.
The goal of this project was to create a model that had one line one plane and one volume. It was the starting point for the first experience of thinking with a 3D mind.
Line is defined as the path made by a moving point. Lines in art have width as well as ends.
Plane is defined as imaginary surface for determining points. This is also called the horizon line.
Volume is defined as the mass or bulk of a three dimensional work; the amount of space it contains.
The reason why I put my Volume first my plane second and my line third was because I want you to look at it from different angels. Looking at it from the top down you see the line and the Shape of the plane. From the side you see the volume which I made into a cylinder and you see the plane which is also a line. You can also see part of the line. With each way and time you look at this project you notice that each time every part of this art piece gets a chance to be dominant. At first glance the dominant piece is my triangle plane.
While doing some research I came across an inspiring Artist named Bathsheba Grossman. you can check her art work at http://www.bathsheba.com/.
Grossman use mathematics as its own form of Art. She is constantly looking for symmetry, Balance, beauty in geometry and getting from zero to infinity. She mostly works in metal but she also works in glass. Her work inspires me because eventhough I feel that I suck at math the way she uses math makes sense to me and I find all her work beatuiful. Her work is complicated and so simple at the same time.
The little tiny details that Grossman puts in her work leaves me looking at it for hours on end.
